I had only been married a couple of months. I had a new home and a new husband, Keith who is wonderful by the way. He is sweet, very caring and a big animal lover. We visited my mom & dad one day, there was a stray cat, that had come to their home. He was meowing & meowing, my niece fed him & wanted to take him home. My sister had to say "No" because there are too many dogs in their neighborhood, so it wouldn't be safe for him. Keith came to the rescue, and we took "Cedric" home. Cedric was a cool cat, it didn't take him long at all to make himself at home.
A couple of months passed, I heard something outside & I went to check it out. It was an abused pit-bull, (a big puppy, and I use the word big very loosely).
You could see all her ribs. She looked like a skeleton. I felt so sorry for her, she wouldn't let you touch her. I had never seen a puppy so scared of people before.
I wasn't planning on taking in a dog, but I couldn't stand to see her starve either. I went in the house and got her some dog food and water. As hungry as she was she
wouldn't go near the food till I got some distance between me & her. I didn't tell Keith I fed her. You know we just got Cedric, and dogs & cats don't get along.
Keith came home from work and I told him she was out there under the truck. Keith being soft-hearted as he is...He fed her too.
She decided to stay. She moved in...making her home on the porch. Every time we opened the door, she ran off. We named her Shuga and called her Shug. Keith said she
could stay till we found her a home. Cedric didn't like her at all. It was three days before little Shug would let anyone pet her. Keith was the first person she let
touch her. My sister came over & the first thing she said was "That's a Pit." And honestly that used to be my take on the breed too. It's all you hear from the media,
another pit has turned on their owner, attacked a child or an elderly person, and another pit has attacked & killed another dog. I had been raised around Boxer bulldogs, they are big babies.
They have a really good temperament, that being said you can make a Boxer mean, just as you can with any other breed. The owners are mostly to blame, if you are a badass you've got to have
a "Pit" and then there are the owners training them to fight. Yes there are some dogs that are aggressive & shouldn't be around people & some of those are Pits, Chows, Rottweilers, Dobermans
and even Pomeranians. Yes there are some mean little devil dogs too...LOL.
All I am saying is this breed is not born evil & Shug is the perfect example of that. Shug is not aggressive at all. We fed her on the porch at the same time as Cedric. She would wolf
her food down & then patiently wait..or should I say eagerly wait till he was finished. After he walked away she would help herself to whatever was left. She never growled or snapped him.
And in the begining Cedric hated her, he would assume a Cat-Ninja stance and smack her on both sides of her face before she could get away from him. But Shug won Cedric over before long.
Maybe he finally realized that a cat with a bad-ass pit bull for a pet was a good thing to have. They played together & slept together (see picture on this page) she would lick him right
on top of the head. They became the best of friends until Cedric passed away. For quite a while it seemed she was looking for him, we missed Cedric & so did little Shug.
Earlier I wrote that Keith said she could stay till we found her a home. Shug was home from the first time I fed her. We wouldn't take anything for her. And the sister I mentioned
before, she loves Shug & brings her treats when she visits. She no longer believes all "Pits" are evil (thanks to Shug). Shug loves everybody, and everybody that meets Shug loves her too. Even the mail-lady brings her treats & talks to her when she picks
up my packages. The Jehovah Witnesses that visit from time to time like her. Shugg does not go to the road, she knows she is not supposed to. She visits Keith's Dad, who lives behind us and
that's it. She doesn't roam. She doesn't bother the cyclists that ride up the road in the evenings. She doesn't bother or go after the dog that lives across the road.
Honestly I have never seen a dog like this. But, Shug is not perfect either. She gets excited when people visit, we have almost got her broke from jumping up, but we can't get her broke from
licking people....So whenever you see a sign that says "Beware of Dog..it will lick you too death" that perfectly describes this dog. I took her to the vet, and people would ask "Is it OK to pet
her?" I'd say sure. "She doesn't bite but I can't keep her from licking you." People were laughing because the ferocious dog in room was a Pomeranian that was growling & barking at everyone that
walked in.
Shug is lucky, dogs like her wind up being used as bait dogs. If the dog catcher had picked her up, she would have been taken to the local shelter and more than likely put down. I don't know how this little dog got free of the situation she was in. But I am so glad she did. She was clearly abused & nearly starved to death. You would think after being so cruelly treated she would hate the world. But Shug loves everybody. She is the perfect "spokes dog" for the breed. Stories like Shug's should be told. The people responsible for the mistreatment of these animals should be held accountable. Don't stereotype all these dogs as vicious fighting dogs. Remember a lot of these animals are abuse survivors & someone's' family member.
I stated before, Shug is lucky...but we are also lucky & blessed to have her. She is inspiration for anyone who feels there is no hope. I know she is just a dog to most people, but think about what this little girl has overcome: Abuse, neglect and a local animal shelter that would have given her three days before killing her. Shugg found her "Happily ever after" with us. No. We are not rich, but Shugg gets love and attention. She has food, water, toys and treats. She is happy..just check out her pictures. She still lives on the porch but she now has a doghouse that sits right by the front door.
This is Shugshouse & you are welcome to stop by & post your opinions, pictures and share your stories...This one little dog has changed the views & opinions of a lot of people, myself included. Lets show the world...There are a lot more of these little angels out there that deserve a "Happily Ever After" too.
